The second rendition of the Salehe Bembury x New Balance 2002R follows its predecessor with a nature ethos as the teaser was captioned with “Water.” A light blue and green combination line up on the premium runner.

There’s no denying that this year has been unlike any other. On the footwear side of the world, 2020 presented a plethora of sneaker collaborations that we simply couldn’t ignore. From creative storytelling to the blending of luxury and performance, 2020’s sneaker collaborations had it all.
Take a look at the top 10 sneaker collaborations of the year below. Stay tuned at Nice Kicks and the Nice Kicks Awards for more.
10. Stussy x Nike
Stussy could do no wrong this year. The Californian-based brand tapped into comfort by releasing a trio of collaborations. Recently, the Stussy x Nike Air Force 1 was on everyone’s radar as the “Fossil” and “Triple Black” colorways accentuated the premium materials and the stitched Swoosh. Stussy also reworked the Nike Air Zoom Spiridon Caged 2 and the Spiridon KK as a nod to Nike heritage.
In essence, simplicity and functionality took over on every single silhouette Stussy reworked.
9. Aimé Leon Dore x New Balance
Teddy Santis’s Aimé Leon Dore is commonly referred to as the modern Ralph Lauren as the Queens staple serves as a beacon for timelessness aesthetic paired with premium quality.
The brand aimed and executed a three-peat of collaborations with New Balance. The Aimé Leon Dore x New Balance 827, the Aimé Leon Dore x New Balance 1300, and the Aimé Leon Dore x New Balance 550 encompass the ethos of both ALD and New Balance as comfort and quality are combined in a tasteful manner.
The colorful 827 speaks to the modern trend as runners continue to transcend streetwear, fashion, and the everyday sneakerhead. The New Balance 1300, which was up for preorder a few months ago and will see a wider release in 2021, features a textured upper and an aged midsole for a classic look. Finally, the New Balance 550 collaboration brought vintage basketball NB heritage to the forefront as ALD continues to bring the best of its partnerships.
8. Dior x Air Jordan 1
We know what you’re thinking. We ranked the “sneaker of the year” too low. Despite its resell allure and premium quality, the Dior x Air Jordan 1 collection didn’t hit like it was meant to. There’s no denying that the collaboration speaks volumes about the reach sneakers can stretch to.
The Dior x Air Jordan 1 is a symbolic representation of the sneaker world and the future it beholds. Luxury is no longer a foreign concept as the power and gravitational pull of sneaker culture, and the Air Jordan 1, is found all over: influencers, pop-culture, and now prestigious fashion houses. The Dior monogram on the Swoosh and the subtle hues that speak toward Dior followers is a great entry point for the future of sneaker collaborations.
If COVID-19 had gone differently, Dior’s planned release experience could’ve moved the collaboration up the ranks. Nonetheless, the Dior x Air Jordan collection is a glimpse of what the future holds.
7. OFF-WHITE x Air Jordan
Virgil Abloh certainly made headlines all year long. As far as sneakers go, the OFF-WHITE partnership progressed exponentially as Abloh worked his signature magic on the Air Jordan 4 and the Air Jordan 5.
The OFF-WHITE x Air Jordan 5 kicked the year off as the sneaker was one of the main events at All-Star Weekend in the Windy City. The deconstructed style of Abloh slimmed the Air Jordan 5 and made it more appealing to the eye.
Abloh and Jordan Brand continued with the hits as the women’s exclusive-Air Jordan 4 “Sail” became the shoe of the summer. The neutral hue was a must for everyone. Abloh and SNKRS blessed a lucky number of women as a SNKRS Shock Drop exclusively for women was available ahead of the general release.
The Air Jordan 5 came full circle for the partnership as the OFF-WHITE x Air Jordan 5 “Sail” arrived as an homage to the Air Jordan 5 “Fire Red,” which celebrated its 30th anniversary by releasing with its OG Nike Air branding.
6. Union x Air Jordan 4
Chris Gibbs and Union LA captured everyone’s attention. Leaked images of the Union Air Jordan 4 raised eyebrows and even sparked up jokes across social media. However, everyone pulled a quick 180 come release day as the Union-exclusive Union x Air Jordan 4 “Guava Ice” and the Union x Air Jordan 4 “Off-Noir” were immediately embraced once the tongue’s intricate design was revealed.
Innovation and loud color combinations with premium materials elevated the Air Jordan 4 thanks to Gibbs and Union’s renowned ability to shake things up.
5. Salehe Bembury x New Balance 2002R
Salehe Bembury has taken the world of sneakers by storm. His passion for storytelling, tooling, and an appreciation of his surroundings continue to transcend across his projects. From his Yeezy days to his Versace day job, Salehe Bembury is making noise.
After months of teasing the sneaker, the antelope canyon inspired New Balance 2002R released in the fall. The colorful iteration captures the beauty found in the canyon while simultaneously reintroducing the New Balance 2002 to the general public, although modified on this collaboration.
4. StrangeLove x Nike SB Dunk Low
While many pre-COVID-19 sneaker releases have been forgotten, the StrangeLove x Nike SB Dunk remains at the forefront of everyone’s memory. The release of the Nike SB Dunk Low was a teaser of what the silhouette was slated for the rest of the year.
However, the high-quality execution of the collaboration from the translucent outsole to the buttery upper and even the subtle branding on the heel, tongue, and insole truly lived up to the skateboard shop and Nike SB partnership.
3. J. Balvin x Air Jordan 1 High OG
The J. Balvin x Air Jordan 1 High OG was more than a collaboration. The Colombian star became the first Latino to ever collaborate with Jordan Brand. Talk about one hell of a debut with the Air Jordan 1 as your first canvas. The multi-color and deconstructed-like pair is as vibrant as it gets as it matches Balvin’s style.
The sneaker was truly a cultural moment. Beyond the hype and discourse that flooded social media over the shoe, the shoe was loved and sought after like nothing else. From South America to Asia, J. Blavin and Air Jordan expanded their Wings with this stellar pair.
2. Joe Freshgoods x New Balance 992
The New Balance 992 had an impressive year. Joe Freshgoods had an amazing year. There’s no argument against the Joe Freshgoods x New Balance 992 ranking at the top of the sneaker collaboration list.
The Chicagoan put New Balance on the map for All-Star Weekend as he had people lined up in the middle of February for a chance to purchase the pair. That’s more than just influence.
Whether you’re a New Balance aficionado or a devoted follower of JFG, the collaborative pair had something for everyone. while many New Balance 992s have released this year, no one did it quite like Joe Freshgoods.
1. Ben & Jerry’s x Nike SB Dunk Low
Ben & Jerry’s brought the flavor this summer with the Nike SB Dunk Low “Chunky Dunky” release. The collaborative effort brought back the joyfulness in sneaker collaborations as wild colors and a range of materials such as cowhide created this pair.
The pair brought back the early-2000s nostalgia of Nike SB collaborations as creativity and risk-taking was mixed in with the iconic Nike SB Dunk low top.
Honorable Mention: Jeff Staple x Warren Lotas
Warren Lotas took the world by storm when he announced the collaboration of his Lotas Dunk with the almighty Jeff Staple and his signature Pigeon colorway that laid the foundation of storytelling, hype, and scarcity within sneaker culture.
Despite the applause it received on social media, Dunk purists and Nike didn’t receive the collaboration with open arms and resulted in Nike suing Warren Lotas.
Nonetheless, the Staple x Lotas Dunk sparked a conversation about creativity, originality, and much more. At the end of the day, all publicity is good publicity.

NK: You’ve been able to tap into multiple facets within the sneaker world from Yeezy to Versace and even Cole Haan. What have these projects and the versatility that they come with mean to you and your innovative creative process?
Salehe Bembury: I consider myself very fortunate to have been able to work at such a diverse array of companies. It has turned me into somewhat of a corporate chameleon.
Each of the aforementioned jobs required a drastically different set of skills and presented many different obstacles. Cole Haan prioritized innovation, while Yeezy prioritized product. Versace was about establishing a new sub-business, and Payless was about maintaining one. Having dealt with these different environments has equipped me with tangible and intangible skills.
A recently frequently used narrative for my career has been, “from Payless to Versace.” This comparison of brand displays the versatility in design I have achieved over the years.

NK: Your ANTA collaboration might seem like a surprise to those who might have just heard about you. What drew you to work with the Chinese athletic brand?
SB: The ANTA collaboration was a unique one because it lived in uncharted territory. We rarely see successful collaborations occur with lesser-known brands. I saw this collaboration as an “opportunity” for both parties. For ANTA, it was a chance to further and more broadly inject their brand into the American market. I wanted to prove to both myself and the audience what I could bring to fruition from scratch.
The market is flooded with re-colors and re-fabrications but bringing a product from concept to shelf is a different obstacle. With ANTA’s level of development, I was confident that I could bring a product to the consumer that was not expected.
NK: You’ve mentioned that many have been fond of your work in past interviews, but the price point was high for some of your fans. The SB-01 and SB-02 aimed to fix that. What were that thought process and discussions like both internally and with the brand?
SB: First and foremost it is for my audience. I often receive comments that my work is appreciated but not obtainable. Working in high fashion I was not able to significantly impact this conversation. However, working with ANTA, I was able to break down that wall. I vividly remember what it was like to be a sneaker consumer, love a sneaker, and not be able to get it. You stress, you lose sleep, it can haunt you.
Ultimately I made it less than $100 dollars for the person reading this that understands exactly what I’m talking about. I made it a requirement that ANTA meets this price point in order to realize this goal.
The Goal of the Salehe Bembury x ANTA SB-01 and SB-02

NK: The timing of the ANTA collaboration fits with this socially distant world we now live in. There’s been an uptick in appreciation for nature. What’s the goal for those who pick up your sneaker?
SB: Despite the fact that a sneaker is specifically designed for an activity, lifestyle use often outweighs the intended use. This year my time in nature has increased. Furthermore, that time spent has significantly influenced my design output. The ANTA project was 100% inspired by my time spent in nature and hiking.
The intended use of the silhouettes are for hiking but they perform equally as well on the street. I have personally consistently used them for hiking because they function at such a high level. Some friends have wear-tested them and the feedback has been the same. The achieved goal is to completely surprise the consumer.
“People don’t know what they want, until you show it to them.” – Steve Jobs
Salehe’s 2020 Recap
NK: Footwear News named you as the designer of the year, and rightly so. The Versace Trigreca, the New Balance 2002R, and now the ANTA SB-01 and SB-02 are just the latest achievements. What’s the importance of these collaborations for you, the future of footwear, and your creative ethos?
SB: I’m currently attracted to displaying versatility and improving my shortcomings as a designer. A few years ago I made a point of focusing on specifically tooling execution. An example of the result of this prioritization is The Chain Reaction. More recently I have decided to focus on color theory. An example of the result of this focus is the color offering of the ANTA collaboration.
The projects that I work on successfully live in dramatically different areas of the market. Despite the fact that I have been in the industry for 10 years, I see these recent projects as “the beginning.” This product bears my name, is my brainchild, and holds my design signature and ethos.
NK:This year has been challenging, to say the least. What’s kept you motivated during these months? How did that translate to your work?
SB: Since moving to California 5 years ago, I have spent an increased amount of time in nature. Starting the majority of my mornings with hikes, I am often inspired by the color palette, aesthetic, and juxtapositions of the environment.
The foundation of the ANTA project was inspired by the Bird’s nest. I was fascinated by the idea that a single twig is weak, but when multiplied and organized it obtains strength and structure.
Salehe on What to Expect and Advice for the Future of Footwear
NK: We know you’re just getting started. What can we expect from you in 2021?
SB: I promise to keep surprising whoever is paying attention.
NK: For those looking to carve their own lane in the world of footwear design, what advice do you have for the next generation of creators?

Salehe Bembury and ANTA officially announce the collaborative effort featuring two original silhouettes. The renowned footwear designer, known for his work with Yeezy, Verace, and recently New Balance, honed in on his craft of tooling and visuals for the SB-01 and SB-02.
The latest collaboration with ANTA is a work of art engineered for performance. The silhouettes include all-new technology “ANTA Nest” inspired by Bembury’s hikes. He was fascinated with the idea that one twig is weak, but when multiplied and intertwined, a powerful structure is born.
Both the SB-01 ($120) and the SB-02 ($90) are tailored for the trail as their respective designs stay true to the ANTA brand while dig Bembury’s sought after influence. In addition to that, Bebury made sure an attainable price point was achieved as a part of this collaborative effort.
“I challenged both Anta and myself to create a successful sneaker for under $100. Often sneakers that are below $100…look like it,” Bembury said. “The SB-02 addresses all of these usually ignored low price point product details while keeping it’s retail price at $90.”
In addition to achieving a comfortable price point, the collection goes beyond the typical construct of a collaboration that usually entails a minor change, a merging of logos, and an elevation of materials. Salehe and ANTA wanted more.
Often, collaborations are simply a recolor or re-fabrication. Being given the opportunity to create new silhouettes and technology from scratch was not an easy task. I thought it was important to balance innovation with familiarity.
The SB-01 and SB-02 is an effort at introducing the consumer to a new sportswear brand and design language while maintaining the relationship they have with sneakers.

The New Balance 327 is the latest silhouette as it blends vintage and modern. The New Balance 992 is getting love from a handful of collaborations. The New Balance KAWHI, which debuted during All-Star Weekend, raised interest thanks to the Clippers’ forward. If you haven’t been keeping track, NB is running up the board.
